As celebrations for Lunar New Year carry on, one HISD high school celebrated by having a performance. Students from Houston Academy for International Studies have been practicing for months for their school’s annual Lunar New Year celebration. The school offers Chinese as a language to learn and has classes taught by Ms. Baltz and Ms. Shyr, from Chinese 1 all the way to AP Chinese. Students taking Chinese are typically required to perform and participate in the program, but whether students were in a Chinese class or not, some still came out to help.
The performance started at around 12:30 and HCC Central’s campus was nice enough to lend their auditorium to the school. Since Houston Academy for International Studies (also know as HAIS) is also an early college high school, the HCC campus is just a short walking distance from HAIS’s campus. During mid day, HAIS students and faculty walked over to HCC to begin the celebration. The auditorium was packed with HAIS students as well as some visitors from Furr and Westside high schools. Parents and mentors of the students were also encouraged to come to the celebration.
Overall, the Lunar New Year celebration done by HAIS was fun and energetic. The students all took part in an annual tradition done by the school. It seemed that students, teachers, and everyone who was in the room had a good time. There was performances done by students such as singing, dancing, and acting as well as the teachers doing trivia quizzes and giving out fun prizes. When the program concluded, everyone appeared to have a very good time at it. Another well done year organized by Ms. Baltz and Ms. Shyr!
