Madagascar is best known in the ice cream industry as the leading producer of vanilla. Lately, Madagascar has suffered a decrease from an average of about 2,200 tons of beans to roughly 1,500 tons in 2015. With this new development prices have increased for real vanilla flavored ice cream.
Vanilla is the flavor that is sold the most from every ice cream manufacturer, that is why some ice cream companies are now making synthetic knock-off vanilla in hopes that it tastes better than the real vanilla. These knock-off vanilla flavored ice cream are said to be cheaper than the real vanilla to make and make it affordable to the public.
If you are a vanilla enthusiast, keep in mind that what you may be eating may not be the real vanilla rather its synthetic friend “wanna be vanilla.”
